Himejima Shrine

The shrine was ranked as a district shrine in 1872. Its date of founding is unknown, but ten stone lanterns in the precincts date from 1648, so Akaruhime no Mikoto is thought to have been enshrined here from the Edo period or earlier. Akaruhime parted from her husband, crossed the sea and began again in a new land, where she taught women weaving and sewing, pottery and musical instruments. For that she has been close to many women and worshipped as the god of decision and action. At the summer festival on the third Saturday and fourth Sunday of July, rites are held to pray for a safe passage through the summer and for the driving out of epidemics.
