"description_en": "Sanko Shrine stands on a low hill south of Tamatsukuri, formerly called Himeyama. Its deities are three, Amaterasu Omikami, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto and Susanoo no Mikoto, and it has long been known as a shrine that wards off chufu, stroke and palsy. Each year a seven-day grand service of prayer against it begins on 1 June. Takeuchi no Sukune, enshrined in a subsidiary shrine, is worshipped as a god of wealth and long life, and as the Jurojin of the Osaka Seven Lucky Gods circuit he draws a constant stream of visitors. Every building was lost in an air raid on 1 June 1945, and after the war the shrine took its present form through the efforts of parishioners and worshippers. The site is thought to have been part of the Sanadamaru fortification, and an underground passage to Osaka Castle called Sanada no Nukeana, Sanada's escape tunnel, is said to have run from here. Traces of it remain, and the entrance is normally closed off with an iron gate. The statue of Sanada Yukimura with his baton raised high was erected on 5 May 1987, on a pedestal cut from stone taken from Chokokuji, the Sanada family temple in Ueda in Shinshu.",

It was pulled down after the winter siege and rebuilt in 1622, with help from the Unno, ancestors of the Sanada, on the site of the Sanada-maru fort, to hold memorial rites for Sanada Yukimura and his son Daisuke. The ground around the temple is where Yukimura built the fort called Sanada-maru and met the attack, on the south-east of Osaka Castle where the Uemachi plateau left the Toyotomi side thinly defended. The temple drew further attention because several men of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi, among them Katsura Hayanosuke, Watanabe Kichitaro and Takahashi Yasujiro, took part in the attack at the Omiya in Kawaramachi, Kyoto, in 1867 in which Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro were killed. The Mimawarigumi also fought at Toba-Fushimi, and those who died there are buried at Shinganji, where their graves remain.",

"description_en": "Built in 1894 as St Agnes Church, it burned in an air raid, and in 1963 it was reborn as the Osaka Cathedral of St Mary. Because the site was the former residence of the Hosokawa daimyo family, the square in front of the cathedral holds stone statues of Hosokawa Gracia and the Christian daimyo Takayama Ukon, and the painting 'Lady Gracia on Her Last Day' by the late Domoto Insho hangs on the wall. Hosokawa Gracia was the third daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide; she married Hosokawa Tadaoki and was baptised. At the Battle of Sekigahara she refused to enter Osaka Castle as a hostage and took her own life. Takayama Ukon was lord of Takatsuki, held to his forbidden Christian faith and was exiled to Manila. The roughly 100 windows of the cathedral are stained glass showing the lives of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, and the pipe organ has 2,400 pipes.",
