"description_en": "Kuromon Market has fed the people of Osaka since the late Edo period, working as both a wholesale and a retail market. Along about 580 m running south from Sennichimae, some 150 shops sell fresh fish, vegetables and fruit, cooked food, clothing and more. It began around Bunsei 5 to 6 (1822-1823), when merchants gathered by the black temple gate of Enmyoji in Nipponbashi and sold fish brought in from Sakai and Kishu. Until the temple and the market burned down in the Namba fire of Meiji 45 (1912) it was called Enmyoji Market. It burned again in the air raids on Osaka and was rebuilt after the war. Because chefs from ryotei restaurants do much of their buying here, the market has many pufferfish and fresh fish shops. At the end of the year it fills with shoppers.",

The exhibition room on the first floor shows rare material on bunraku in displays that change through the year, and anyone can look in. In bunraku the story is carried by joruri, chanted narration that tells a dramatic text to set melodies, and by the shamisen, the stringed instrument that plays it. The puppets are finely made, and mechanisms let them show joy, anger, grief and pleasure in time with the chanting and the shamisen. The people who work them are called ningyo tsukai, and the three-man operation, in which three of them move one puppet, is said to be rare anywhere in the world. Ningyo joruri was performed all over Japan in the early Edo period, and through the work of two men of genius, the chanter Takemoto Gidayu and the writer Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Osaka established itself as the home of the art, as it remains.",

Its mountain name Shigisan comes from that place name, and its temple name Hoan-ji from the koan, the deliberation on spreading the Buddhist teaching, undertaken there. It is said to have been the temple attached to Ikukunitama Shrine. When Hideyoshi built his castle it moved to the site where Ikukunitama Shrine now stands, and it received 300 koku of temple land from the Tokugawa shogunate, after which successive wardens of Osaka Castle were deeply devoted to it. It lost those lands in the anti-Buddhist movement at the Meiji Restoration, and the head priest Tatsuei rebuilt the temple on its present site in Meiji 12 (1879). It then met a further misfortune in the air raid of March 1945, when its halls burned to ashes. The Sho Kannon and the Kangiten escaped the fire, and the head priest Tatsue rebuilt the temple as it stands now.",

In the Edo period the street of Nipponbashi was called Nagamachi and was a post town of long standing. There was a boat landing at the bridgehead, and the spot was busy as a junction of water and land transport. On the west side of the south end, at the corner turning into Dotonbori where foot traffic was heaviest, the shogunate set up a kosatsuba, a board for official notices that answered to today's government gazette board. At the time it is said to have been a wooden bridge about 40 m long and 7 m wide. After several rounds of repair from the Meiji era on, it was rebuilt in Showa 44 (1969) along with the construction of the subway, and stands so today. The main posts of the old bridge remain at the bridgehead. The Nipponbashi area was a busy second-hand bookshop district in the Meiji era, and after the war shops appeared selling parts and tools for home-built radios, which set it on the way to becoming the electronics district known today as Den Den Town.",
