Kusunoki Masanaga was a warrior of the Nanbokucho period and a grandson of Kusunoki Masashige, born in the spring of Bunchu 1 (1372) in the neighbouring village of Shogakuji. In Oei 19 (1412) he is said to have retired to the Tenjinsha near Kuwaharadera and taken charge of its rites. The ground around the monument to Masanaga was the shrine, known as Tomiya-san. There were said to be wide woods, ponds and a low hill here then, and this is where Masanaga is said to have had his house. The deity is Inishiki Iribiko no Mikoto, a son of the eleventh emperor, Suinin, and the precincts originally covered 300 tsubo. Its origin lies in the entry for the thirteenth year of Emperor Nintoku in the Nihon Shoki, 'in winter, in the tenth month, the Yokono embankment was built': a huge levee is said to have been raised to stop the flooding of the Tachibana River, the old Hirano River, which then ran near here, and the shrine began as a prayer for the safety of that embankment and for the river to run gently. In the early Edo period, after the shrine building collapsed, the deity was moved to the precincts of the present Tatsumi Shrine. In the Kyoho era the kokugaku scholar Namikawa Seisho surveyed the site and reported that it was an old shrine of standing, and on that basis the villagers rebuilt it in 1731 with official permission. A miyaza was formed and kept the sacred lamp from then on, but under the shrine merger order of 1907 it was merged into Tatsumi Shrine and abolished.
