        "description_en": "The Osaka Exchange, formerly the Osaka Securities Exchange, stands south-east of Naniwabashi, the lion bridge, and is known for its old architecture: a grand white cylindrical front and an entrance lobby with beautiful stained glass. It was finished in Showa 10 (1935) to the design of the Hasebe Takekoshi architectural office. The exchange traces its origin to the early Edo period. Around the Joo and Kanbun years (1652-1673) the domains set up warehouse compounds in Osaka, shipping and storing their tribute rice and selling it to merchants. The most powerful of those merchants, Yodoya, kept house at the south end of what is now Yodoyabashi and traded busily, and other merchants gathered there until a market formed of itself. This came to be called the Yodoya rice market and is said to be the beginning of securities trading in Japan. The market later moved across the river to Dojima, and in Kyoho 15 (1730) the shogunate licensed it as the Dojima rice exchange. Trading there was mostly choaimai, settled by paying the difference in the books, which makes it famous as the first organised futures exchange in the world. Since the merger with the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2013 and its place in the Japan Exchange Group, the Osaka Exchange has carried the Dojima line forward and deals in futures and options. At the first trading of the new year, office workers in kimono clap in unison in the entrance lobby. The OSE Gallery, where the western base of the Japan Exchange Group explains the markets in shares and futures, can be visited freely; groups of ten or more should book.",

        "description_ja": "東横堀川に架かる高麗橋。 ,
        "description_en": "Korai Bridge crosses the Higashiyokobori River. The bridge is said to have existed since the Toyotomi period, and its name is explained in more than one way: that the Koma no Murotsumi, a guesthouse that received envoys from the states of the Korean peninsula in ancient times, stood here, or that a base for trade with the Korean peninsula was in this area when Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid out the town of Osaka. In the Edo period it was a kogibashi, a bridge maintained by the shogunate, and the shogunate's kosatsu, the board on which laws and notices were posted, stood at its western end. Korai bashi suji was lined with the Mitsui kimono shop, now the Mitsukoshi department store, and the Mitsui money exchange, and was full of life. In the Keicho era (1596 to 1614) it is said to have been a handsome bridge with giboshi finials. The Meiji government placed on Korai Bridge a ritei genpyo, a marker showing the start and end point of roads, and made it the point from which road distances in western Japan were measured. In Meiji 3 (1870) it became the first bridge in Osaka to be rebuilt as an iron bridge imported from Britain, and people of the time were amazed by the spectacle of its black sheen under the gas lamps and gave it the fond nickname Kurogane bashi, the iron bridge. The present bridge is a reinforced concrete arch bridge rebuilt in Showa 4 (1929), and the giboshi on its railings and the main posts modelled on the turret house that stood at the western end tell of the bridge's history.",

Konishi Gisuke Shoten, founded in 1870 as a dealer in medicinal goods and now Konishi Co., Ltd., began work on it in 1900 and completed it three years later, in 1903. Good timber was used, and although the house is plain, careful design and small inventions can be seen in the individual rooms and the tea room. The kitchen holds a large stove that once cooked for about fifty family members and employees. It was refitted as an archive museum in 2020, the hundred and fiftieth year since the firm was founded. Its deities are Sukunahikona no Mikoto, the ancestral god of medicine in Japan, and Shinno Entei, the ancestral god of Chinese medicine, which is why the shrine is also called Shinno-san. It began in An'ei 9 (1780), when a divided spirit of Sukunahikona no Mikoto was brought from Gojo Tenjin Shrine in Kyoto and enshrined together with Shinno, whom the drug merchants of Doshomachi had long kept at their guild hall. The hariko no tora, a papier-mache tiger popular as an Osaka souvenir, is the shrine's amulet against illness. When cholera spread through Osaka in Bunsei 5 (1822), a pill called 虎頭殺鬼雄黄圓 was made as a remedy against the epidemic and handed out free, with prayers for recovery, along with the paper tigers, and the sick are said to have got better. The Shinno Festival is held on 22 and 23 November each year, when the paper tigers are given out. The Kusuri no Doshomachi Museum is in the precincts.",

Stone lion statues stand at the four ends of the bridge, two in the 'a' form and two in the 'un' form, so it is also known by the nickname Lion Bridge. In the Edo period this was a wooden bridge on Naniwabashi-suji, the street just west of Sakaisuji, with its north end in Hinoue-cho and its south end in Kitahama 1-chome. It was about 207 m long and 5.7 m wide, and it was a kogi-bashi, a bridge under the direct control of the shogunate. Because it arched upward, people on it could look out over the 16 bridges nearby and the mountains in the distance, and the bridge is said to have been a first-class seat for watching fireworks and taking the evening cool, busy as a place to spend leisure time. In Meiji 45 (1912) it was moved to its present position when the municipal tram line on Sakaisuji was extended from Kitahama north to Tenjinbashi 6-chome. The three-storey building has Gothic pointed-arch windows, yellow and green coloured glass and a tower of careful design, and was completed in 1930. It was designed and built by Takenaka Corporation under the design guidance of William Merrell Vories, who came to Japan in the middle of the Meiji period as an English teacher at Hachiman Commercial High School and went on with Christian mission work and with social work based on its principles in education, publishing, medicine and schools; he is also known for spreading Mentholatum and for designing the Daimaru store in Shinsaibashi. Naniwa Church goes back to 1877 and Naniwa Kokai, the first self-supporting church in Japan, founded independently by eleven believers. On the morning of 24 July each year the hokonagashi rite of the Tenjin Matsuri, in which a sacred halberd is floated down the river to decide the otabisho, the place the spirit of the deity will go to that year, is held at the foot of the bridge, and that is said to be where the name comes from. The first bridge here is said to have been built in Taisho 7 (1918), but the present one was completed in Showa 4 (1929). The classical Japanese style of the railings, the lamps and the main posts is thought to have been chosen in view of the hokonagashi rite held here. The railings and lamps were later lost to wartime requisitioning of metal, but in Showa 55 (1980) railings and lamps in a classical design suited to the Nakanoshima district, and a brick paved footway, were installed, and they remain today.
