In ancient times the area around it was called Tamatsukuri-oka, and the tamatsukuribe, the guild that made magatama and other beads, lived here, which is the origin of the present place name Tamatsukuri. In the Toyotomi and Tokugawa periods it was known as a guardian shrine of Osaka Castle, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Hideyori and Yodo-dono are said to have held tea gatherings here at which Sen no Rikyu made the tea. Hokoku Shrine burned down completely in the fighting of Tensho 4 (1576), in the later fall of Osaka Castle and in the air raids of the Second World War, and the present buildings were rebuilt after the war.
