It is handed down through the generations that in 901, when Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu and was travelling down the Yodo River by boat, the people of Futaeshinke village in Settsu province came out to meet him and he came ashore, and that they led cattle around to comfort him. The grounds are raised, on a small rise. Around the Tenpo years, 1830 to 1844, the intendant of the day, Chikuzan Zozaemon, issued an order forbidding damage to the embankment and had earth piled on the levee. A trace of this survives in the sand-carrying rite held on 25 October, in which kindergarten children pile purifying sand on carrying poles, climb the stone steps and bring the sand into the precincts. The precincts hold Edo period lanterns and water basins, and a camphor tree said to be about 500 years old stands out.
