The name is said to come from a large sendan tree that stood on the street leading to it. It stayed a wooden bridge until Meiji 18 (1885), when a great flood washed it away. Because it was then decided to build the Osaka Library, now the Nakanoshima Library, and Osaka City Hall nearby, the bridge was put up again in Taisho 3 (1914), and it was rebuilt once more in Showa 10 (1935). The present bridge dates from Showa 60 (1985). It keeps the image of the old bridge, while the bridge surface and other details were designed with an emphasis on harmony with the historic buildings behind it, such as the Nakanoshima Library and the Central Public Hall.
