It was founded in 949. Shrine tradition says that in 901 Sugawara no Michizane, then Minister of the Right, lost a power struggle at court, and on his way into exile at Dazaifu he stopped to pray at the Daishogun shrine that stood on the present grounds. After Michizane died, in 949, seven pine trees grew overnight in front of that Daishogun shrine and their tips glowed night after night. Emperor Murakami heard of it and had Michizane enshrined there, and that is taken as the beginning of the shrine. Since then it has been the tutelary shrine of the Tenma district and a shrine of learning and the performing arts, a place local people and Osaka merchants have turned to.
