The site was once the main residence of the Sumitomo family, with its garden, and was given to the City of Osaka so that an art museum could be built there. The original main hall and the exhibition rooms added later underground together make three floors above ground and two below, and the galleries of the main hall hold special exhibitions and displays from the collection. Those displays draw on more than 8,500 holdings of Japanese and Chinese painting, sculpture and craft, shown from time to time along with works deposited by temples and shrines, and many of them are designated Important Cultural Properties. The Tennoji Gallery, formerly the underground exhibition room, is in constant use for juried exhibitions held by art societies. The main hall also houses an art institute where drawing, painting and sculpture are studied in practice.
