    "description_ja": "江戸時代、北中島一帯は一万数千石の米を生産する農村だったが、低湿地で土砂堆積による洪水がひどく、一柳太郎兵衛、西尾六右衛門、沢田久左衛門の三庄屋が先頭に立って、幕府に排水路の設置を強く訴えた。幕府は「工事の費用は、すべて百姓が負担する」という条件をつけて設置を許可したが、不作に苦しむ村民が「せめて多少の補助を」と嘆願すると、感情を害し、許可を取り消した。耐えられなくなった三庄屋は、延宝6年（1678年）3月11日、新太郎松樋（しんたろうまつひ）を水路の拠点として、無許可のまま工事を強行した。村民たちは老若男女を問わず工事に参加し、昼夜の別なく働いて、福村吐口樋（ふくむらはけぐちひ）までの5102間（約9200メートル）、深さ3尺（約90センチメートル）の水路を28日間で完成させた。現在の東淀川区から西淀川区に至り、大阪湾に直結した大水路は埋め立てられたが、西淡路5丁目の新幹線の高架のそばに「新太郎松樋」の石柱と「中島大水道顕彰碑」（昭和63年）が建てられている。",
    "description_en": "In the Edo period the Kita-Nakajima area was farmland producing more than ten thousand koku of rice, but it lay low and wet and flooded badly as silt built up. Three village headmen, Ichiyanagi Tarobee, Nishio Rokuemon and Sawada Kyuzaemon, led a strong appeal to the shogunate for a drainage channel. The shogunate allowed it on condition that the peasants bear the whole cost, and when the villagers, suffering from a poor harvest, begged for at least some help, it took offence and withdrew the permission. The three headmen could bear it no longer, and on the eleventh day of the third month of Enpo 6 (1678) they began the work without permission, with the Shintaromatsu sluice as the channel's starting point. Villagers young and old joined in and worked day and night, and in twenty-eight days they finished a channel of 5,102 ken, about 9,200 metres, three shaku deep, about 90 centimetres, running to the Fukumura outfall sluice. The great channel, which ran from what is now Higashiyodogawa-ku to Nishiyodogawa-ku and straight into Osaka Bay, has been filled in, but a stone pillar for the Shintaromatsu sluice and a monument to the Nakajima Great Channel, of Showa 63, stand beside the Shinkansen viaduct at Nishiawaji 5-chome.",
