The quiet beauty here is set apart from the noise and crowds of the city and differs in character from the solemnity of the main hall, yet it clearly suggests a place of calm. A stone bearing a haiku by Matsuo Basho stands unobtrusively, watching quietly over the precinct. The temple is also well known as the place where the Shinsengumi had their lodgings in the last years of the shogunate.
