In Tensho 11 (1583), the reign of Emperor Ogimachi, Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle and the object of worship was moved to the present site. In the Osaka air raids of the Second World War the shrine burned down completely except for a single Edo-period storehouse, and the present buildings were rebuilt after the war. Kozu-gu is known as the setting of the classical rakugo stories Kozu no Tomi, Takakura Gitsune and Sutokuin, and was long a busy centre of the townspeople's culture of Osaka.
