It is counted as one of the seven shrines of Shitennoji. From early times until the middle of the Meiji period a handsome moat ran along the south side of the grounds, and because worshippers crossed this moat to reach the shrine it was given the name Horikoshi, crossing the moat. Kubotsu Oji, the first of the Kumano Oji shrines, which once stood at Watanabe no Tsu in Hachikenya, is enshrined in the precincts. The shrine faces the busy Tanimachi-suji, but trees several hundred years old keep the grounds quiet.
