Its mountain name Shigisan comes from that place name, and its temple name Hoan-ji from the koan, the deliberation on spreading the Buddhist teaching, undertaken there. It is said to have been the temple attached to Ikukunitama Shrine. When Hideyoshi built his castle it moved to the site where Ikukunitama Shrine now stands, and it received 300 koku of temple land from the Tokugawa shogunate, after which successive wardens of Osaka Castle were deeply devoted to it. It lost those lands in the anti-Buddhist movement at the Meiji Restoration, and the head priest Tatsuei rebuilt the temple on its present site in Meiji 12 (1879). It then met a further misfortune in the air raid of March 1945, when its halls burned to ashes.
